The morningwhen Lamentations 3:22-24 hits you in a different way.

As a child, my grandma made me memorize scriptures, and although I didn't quite understand why or what they meant at the time, I think I have a better understanding now. Last year, Lamentations 3:22-24:

“Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed,

for his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;

therefore I will wait for him.”

kept popping up in my personal devotions and random bible studies.

As this year, 2024, came around, it became more evident that it was becoming my reality. On March 1st, my life changed when my husband suffered a severe heart attack and had to undergo emergency surgery. Since that day, I have found comfort in the words from Lamentations 3:22-24, reminding me that we were not consumed because of the Lord's great love. His compassions never fail, and they are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness.

When I am overwhelmed by the unexpected bills, emails, Dr. appointments, cardiac rehab visits, and responsibilities that come with taking care of my regular schedule, I hear those words echoing in the back of my head. It is then that I find strength and focus to know that His love will carry me today because He is faithful to His word. His mercy this morning is new for me, and I can focus on that. It's like what my friend in recovery always says, "just for today, I won't drink." Similarly, I find myself saying: “Is the same God from yesterday but new mercy for me today, and just for today, He is my portion. I can wait for Him.”

I am terrible at small talk, and some can witness to that! But at least I am improving at this internal small talk. Just for today, I can focus on this new mercy. He is my portion, and I can wait for Him. One of my (non-spiritual) gifts is to look at what's wrong and then want to fix things. However, this time, this scripture for my season helps me focus on what's right and be grateful. What a wonderful invitation to acknowledge that I am the mercy of a great Lord with great love and faithfulness every single morning. And because I am a slow learner, a few weeks ago, in a casual conversation while visiting my friend, I heard her tell her daughter (it was bedtime). You know kids have everything urgent right before they sleep (I have to finish my video game, I don’t want to go to practice tomorrow, I forgot to do my homework, etc.), she told her daughter. Look, I don’t know about tomorrow. Between now and then, anything can happen. Worry about bedtime; we will worry about tomorrow, tomorrow! Even in the prayer Jesus taught his disciples, he said, "Give us our daily bread. "Do today today- and do tomorrow tomorrow! Lord, give me wisdom for today, strength for today, boldness, and protect me today.

Friends, I want to encourage you to pause today and think: What is the area in your life you have not used or tapped into God's new mercy for today? I pray that, just like me today, you come to see Lamentations 3:22-24 as your invitation that our God wants us to depend on His provision daily. His love is faithful, and His mercies are new every single morning. He is our portion; therefore, we can do it today.

There's much more I would love to write, but I have to continue to do today away from this screen. However, I wanted to share this little nugget of encouragement with you!
